What is a Modifier?

In short, a modifier is a describer. A modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that describes another word, phrase, or clause.

Example of Grammatical Modifier:

• He is a cute baby.

In this sentence, “cute” is an adjective modifying the noun, “baby.” The adjective “cute” is a modifier. “Cute” modifies the type of baby.

Types of Modifiers

Several different types of modifiers exist in English. The following is a list of modifiers with explanations and examples.          

Adjective Modifiers

Adjectives modify nouns and pronouns. They modify in that they answer the following questions in relationship to the nouns they modify,

• Which one?
  • that baby
  • Which baby? That baby.
• How many?
  • three babies
  • How many babies? Three babies.

Adverb Modifiers

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. They modify in that they answer the following questions in relationship to the nouns they modify,

• When?
  • arrive tomorrow
  • Arrive when? Tomorrow.
• Where?
  • dance everywhere
  • Dance where? Everywhere.
• How often?
  • dance frequently
  • Dance how often? Frequently.
• How much?
  • answer completely
  • Answer how much? Completely.

Participle Phrases

A participle phrases is a groups of words that function as adjectives to modify nouns. Participle phrases begin with a present or past participle.

Participle Phrase Examples:

• The boy riding up and down the street is tired.
  • The underlined participle phrase starts with the present participle “riding”
  • The participle phrase modifies the noun, boy
• The cabinets stuffed to the brim needed to be organized.
  • The underlined participle phrase starts with the past participle “stuffed”
  • The participle phrase modifies the noun, cabinets

Prepositional Phrases

Prepositional phrases are groups of words that function as adverbs or adjectives to modify. Prepositional phrases begin with a preposition and end with a noun.

Prepositional phrases modify,

• Where?
  • by the lake
• When?
  • on time
• Who?
  • with you
• What?
  • besides the dog

Phrases and Clauses as Modifiers

Single words are not the only types of modifiers. Phrases and clauses act as modifiers.

Clause Modifier Examples:

• The boy who was at the store bought cookies.
  • This is an example of an adjective clause.
  • The adjective clause is a group of words that modifies “boy”

Phrase Modifier Examples:

• Please take a seat near me.
  • This is an example of a prepositional phrase.
  • The prepositional phrase is a group of words that modifies “seat”

Why are Modifiers Important?

Modifiers are critical to the English language (That sentence alone has two!). Without them, we would not be as efficient or effective in our reading and writing. Furthermore, our sentences would be incredibly boring.

Here are a few sentences trying to express a day’s activities without any modifiers:

• I woke. I ate. I dressed. I drove. I worked. I ate. I worked. I drove. I exercised. I showered. I slept.

That is not engaging or interesting at all!

Here is part of that same schedule with modifiers,

• I woke up at 6:00 a.m. this morning. For breakfast, I ate a bagel and two eggs. I chose to wear a black suit with a blue shirt and matching tie. At about 9 o’clock, I arrived at work. After a busy morning, I consumed a hearty lunch.

Clearly, modifiers enhance language and affect how we communicate daily.

Misplaced Modifiers

What is a misplaced modifier? A misplaced modifier is when the modifier in a sentence is separated from the word it describes or the word it describes is not present at all.

For example,

• Walking through the woods in autumn, leaves began falling from the trees.

In this example, the subject that the modifier is describing is not present in the sentence. Leaves cannot walk through the woods in autumn.

The sentence could be corrected as follows,

• Walking through the woods in autumn, I noticed the leaves falling from the trees.

Modifier adalah kata atau kalimat atau phrase atau clause dalam Bahasa inggris yang berfungsi menerangkan kata atau kelompok kata lain dalam satu kalimat. Dalam parts of speech, modifier dapat berfungsi sebagai adjective atau kata sifat dan adverb atau kata keterangan. Ketika modifier berfungsi sebagai adjective, maka kalimatnya dapat dalam bentuk simple adjective, adjective pharse, clause, participle adjective atau infinitive (kata kerja dasar atau bentuk pertama).

Fungsi adjective umumnya digunakan untuk menerangkan noun atau kata benda yang terdapat dalam kalimat. Sedangkan modifier yang berfungsi sebagai adverb kalimatnya dapat dalam bentuk simple sentence adverb, adverbial phrase, clause, contoh prepositional phrase, dan infinitive atau kata kerja bentuk pertama. Fungsi sebagai adverb umumnya menerangkan kata kerja / verb, adjectibe. atau adverb lain dalam satu kalimat.

Selanjutnya dalam sentence as modifier, kata atau kalimat yang diterangkan disebut head. Modifier yang muncul sebelum head, biasa disebut premodifier dan modifier yang dituliskan setelah head disebut postmodifier.

1. Simpel Adjective

• My mother bought a new dress (Ibu saya membeli baju baru)
• My sister saw a black cat (Adik saya melihat seekor kucing hitam)

Perhatikan bahwa kedua kalimat di atas merupakan premodifier karena kata new menrangkan dress dan kata black menerangkan cat.

2. Adjective Phrase

• My brother bought a ball smaller than a marble (Kakak saya membeli bola yang lebih kecil dari kelereng)
• Ani saw a mouse smaller than a spoon (Ani melihat seekor tikus yang lebih kecil dari sendok)

Kedua contoh sentence as modifier di atas tergolong postmodifier karena sentence as modiffer digunakan untuk menerangkan noun atau kata benda sebelumnya. Menerangkan ball pada kalimat pertama dan mouse pada kalimat kedua.

3. Adjective Clause

• The book is very interesting (Buku itu sangat menarik)
• The book that Aisyah has read is very interesting (Buku yang tekah di baca Aisyah sangat menarik)
  That Aisyah has menerangkan kata benda / noun dari the book.
• She drops a box which very big (Ia mendorong sebuah kotak yang sangat berat)
  Kata which very big menjelaskan kata box.

4. Prepositional Phrase

• Ani dan Ari bought a dress on the shop (Ani dan Ari membeli sebuah baju di toko)
• Melia put the apple on the refrigerator (Melia meletakkan apel di atas meja)

Kedua contoh kalimat di atas adalah contoh prepositional phrase, yaitu benda dijelaskan letaknya.

5. Infinitife

• The best time to visit her is Sunday (Waktu terbaik untuk mengunjunginya adalah hari MInggu)
• He brings the apple to give his mother (ia membawa apel untuk diberikan kepada ibunya)

Kata visit dan give menjelaskan kata benda di depannya, yaitu time dan apple.

Sentence As Modifier Sebagai Adverb

Contoh sentence as modifier sebagai adverb menjelaskan kata kerja, adjective, atau adverb lain dalam kalimat.

1. Simple Adverb

• I accidentally hit my sister (Saya secara tidak sengaja memukul adik)
• She work the job carefully (ia mengerjakan pekerjaan tersebut hati-hati)

Kaliamt pertama adalah premodifier dan kalimat kedua adalah postmodifier. Keduanya menerangkan kata kerja.

2. Adverb Phrase

• She dance so beautifully (ia menarik dengan begitu cantik)
• Her live very suczesfully (Hidupnya sangat sukses)

3. Adverb Clause

• He came when I went to the market (Ia datang ketika saya pergi ke pasar)
• He left me when I needed her (Ia pergi ketika saya membutuhkannya)

4. Prepositional Phrase

• She is beautiful on the stage (Ia sangat cantik di atas panggung)
• She is the best student in the class (Ia adalah pelajar terbaik di kelas)

5. Infinitive

• To watch the Taylor Swift concert, you must buy a ticket (untuk melihat konser Talor Swift, kamu harus membeli tiket)
• If I want the expensive bag, to save my money (Jika menginginkan tas mahal, saya harus menabung).
